Step 1: Selecting a Format
For our Starved Rock camping trip in June of 2024 to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I wanted to create something a little different. Since it was just a two-day trip, I figured that I could fit all the photos, journaling, and stories into a different format.
I considered creating a “postcard style” notebook using a Traveler’s Notebook Co. Refill Postcard booklet but decided to use a 13 page accordion insert from the Traveler’s Notebook Co. The video below shows examples of previous notebooks and the options that I considered.
After looking back at past projects, I decided to use an accordion insert for this trip. In the steps to follow, I will share my process for selecting, photos, creating the general layout and assembling the project.
Creating a Prototype
Using a blank sheet of paper, I created a small mock-up of the accordion insert to help me plan out my content. See the video below where I share my prototype process.
With a format selected, I will create a “scrapbook kit” for this project. I will share insights into curating your own set of supplies pulling together new scrapbook purchases and digging into your stash.
Tips & Tricks:
Since this is the first time I have used an accordion style format, I decided to make a prototype at a smaller scale. I do this a lot when I work with a new size or album style.
For many trips, I have A LOT of photos but since this trip was just one night and two days, in my prototype I included the size and amount of photos I thought I might want to use to document this trip. This will enable me to help select the photos for this format
I saved a few pieces of ephemera such as a map and our camping reservation ticket. I also downloaded the map in PDF format from the state park website so I if wanted to resize it, I could.
