Around Here | Opting Out

June 29, 2024 | Earlier this week, I made my Instagram account private and placed my Modern Memory Keeping Blog in a member only area. I became increasingly uncomfortable with the potential for my projects and videos being mined to train artificial intelligence models. While I know there are many positives to AI, my preference is to minimize my personal scrapbook photos and memories from so easily being scraped.

In The New York Times article “Can I Opt Out of Meta’s A.I. Scraping on Instagram and Facebook? Sort Of.”, written by Jesus Jiménez, it seems the only way to opt is set your account to private. “For Meta users in the U.S., there isn’t a way to stop Meta A.I. from learning from your public social media posts, as there are no privacy laws specific to this.” Additional guidance can be found in Fast Company’s article ”Instagram is training AI on your data. It’s nearly impossible to opt out”.
